Uhhh… how should I speak? Loud, so the whole company hears at once? But a shout scatters. And who is even listening — everyone, all together? No. A voice that tries to reach everyone reaches no one. Maybe I don't speak to the crowd at all. Maybe I speak to a few — the ones who can hold a thought the way I hold it — and let them carry it the rest of the way. So it isn't how loudly, it's who first— Oh.
Here is how I should speak. Not to everyone — to the few who can understand me as I understand myself. I am Russ, CEO of Potatuhs, and I've learned my words are not orders barked across a floor. They are wisdom handed to my chiefs, who take a whole storm of my thinking and hold it whole. Then they do what I cannot: they make it simple, and hand it down to their people in words a busy potato can act on before lunch. I speak once, clearly. Understanding does the rest.
I will speak once, and speak clearly, and trust it to travel. Understanding is the only real chain of command — not my volume, but their comprehension. What my chiefs grasp, the company becomes.
What I expect of my chiefs:
- Understand my thoughts as I understand them — never act on half of one.
- Translate what you understand into simple, doable words for your people.
- Shield your people from the rest — the whole storm behind an order would only rot their focus.
